Thomas Nickson

Thomas E. Nickson, Ph.D.

is the regulatory environmental policy lead for Monsanto, USA. Graduated with a BS degree in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana, and completed his Ph. D. work in synthetic organic chemistry in 1981 at the State University of New York at Buffalo.  Dr. Nickson’s thesis described synthetic approaches to specific psuedoguaianolide sequiterpene lactones which, at that time, were of interest as anti-cancer compounds.

Dr. Nickson joined Monsanto in 1981 as a research scientist working on process development of a new acetanilide herbicide.  He subsequently worked as a synthetic organic chemist focusing on developing new herbicides using the tools of organophosphorous and organofluorine chemistry.

He also conducted research to isolate and elucidate the structure of natural products with potential agricultural applications. In 1991, he became the scientific coordinator for the Roundup Ready Canola project, which eventually encompassed several Roundup Ready Projects around the world.

He developed the Ecological Technology Center for Monsanto Company, which is responsible for conducting risk assessments for biotech and chemical products. Today, he is the regulatory environmental policy lead for Monsanto and is very active in biosafety issues including the ISBR beginning in Saskatoon, the Cartagena Protocol on Biodiversity and capacity building efforts around environmental risk assessment for biotech crops.
