Kornelia Smalla

Kornelia Smalla, Prof. Dr.
Senior scientist and head of the microbial
ecology group.

Master in Chemistry (1980) and PhD in Biochemistry (1985), Martin-Luther-University Halle
Habilitation in Microbiology (1999), Technical University Wilhelmina-Carolo Braunschweig
Teaching at the TU Braunschweig since 1995
Research interests:
• Development and application of new molecular techniques for microbial ecology studies
• Ecology and diversity of bacterial antibiotic resistance genes and plasmids, horizontal gene spread
• Community-level analysis of structural and functional diversity of the rhizosphere and soil (characterisation of succession of microbial populations in response to environmental triggers)
• Evaluation of effects of field releases of genetically modified plants on microbial communities (horizontal gene transfer; effects on the structural and functional diversity of microbial communities).
Research funding:
The research has been funded by the EU, ESF, INTAS, BMBF, DFG, BMVEL projects.
Present professional services:
Editor of FEMS Microbiology Ecology and editorial board member of Biology and Fertility of Soil, PLASMID, Environmental Biosafety Research and Applied and Environmental Microbiology
