Joachim Schiemann

Joachim Schiemann, Ph.D.
is head of the Genetechnology and Biosafety Division of the Federal Biological Research
Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA).


He is giving lectures at Technical University Braunschweig (Faculty of Bio-sciences and
Psychology) and Lüneburg University (Faculty of Economy and Social Sciences).
Dr. Schiemann received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Martin-Luther-University Halle in 1977.
From 1976 to 1991 he worked as senior scientist at the Institute for Plant Biochemistry Halle
and the Central Institute for Genetics and Crop Plants Research Gatersleben.
In 1991 he joined the BBA's Institute for Plant Virology, Microbiology and Biosafety. From 2000 to
2004, Dr. Schiemann was a member of the Scientific Advisory Council "Biosafety research
and monitoring" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). He has been
coordinating several BMBF- and EU-funded cluster projects on biosafety research.
From 2000 to 2003 he was a member of the Scientific Committee on Plants of the European
Commission, Health & Consumer Protection Directorate-General, and since 2003 he is a
member of the Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms of the European Food Safety Authority.
Since September 2004, Dr. Schiemann is President of the International Society for
Biosafety Research.
