Leda Mendonca-Hagler

Leda Mendonca-Hagler, Ph.D.
is a Professor of Microbiology at the
Institute of Microbiology Prof. Paulo de Goés,
Federal University of Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil (UFRJ).


She received the B.Sc. degree in Industrial Chemistry, Ph D. in Microbiology (UFRJ)
and did her postdoctoral training at the Univ. of California, Davis, USA, on Yeast Biology
and at the Inst. for Soil Fertility, Wageningen, NL, on Molecular Microbial Ecology.
Prof. Mendonça-Hagler is on the faculty of Microbiology and Plant Biotechnology Graduate
Programs at UFRJ and has been teaching undergraduate courses on General
Microbiology and Microbial Ecology at the Schools of Medicine, Nutrition, Biology,
Microbiology and Pharmacy.

She was the head of the General Microbiology Department, the chair of the Microbiology
Graduate Program, the General Coordinator for the 32 Graduate Programs in Health Sciences,
and was involved in founding a new Biotechnology Graduate Program at UFRJ. She has advised
more than 50 graduate students and published over 100 articles and book chapters.

Prof. Mendonça-Hagler has been the coordinator of international (EU and bilateral) and
national research projects in the areas of microbial ecology, biotechnology and biosafety.
She has been the president and member of the organizing committee of several national
and international scientific meetings.
Prof. Mendonça-Hagler has been a consultant for public and private companies and part of the
editorial board of international journals. She was a member of the Brazilian National Technical Commission on Biosafety and has been an advisor to governmental agencies for the
negotiations of international agendas, including the Biosafety Protocol.
Prof. Mendonça-Hagler received the award "Honour of the Scientific Merit" and the title
of "Comendador", from the President of Brazil. She was a board member of the Society for
Microbial Ecology and is an Ambassador for the
American Society for Microbiology. Prof. Mendonça-Hagler is the Chairperson of the International Commission on Yeasts of IUMS, Vice-president of the Brazilian Biosafety Association, and is
member of the executive committee of the Brazilian Society for Microbiology and of the
International Society for Biosafety Research.
