Ken-ichi Hayashi, Ph.D.
has been from 1991 to the present, a member
of Committeeon Utilization of Transgenic Organisms, Research Council, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF),
and also a Senior Advisor, Society for Techno-Innovation of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (STAFF).

Dr. HAYASHI received a Ph.D. in Crop Science from University of Tokyo in 1971. From 1957 to
1977, he worked as a researcher and Head of Laboratory, Division of Genetics, National Institute
of Agricultural Sciences. He worked as a Research Coordinator, Research Council, MAFF, from
1977 to 1979, engaged in cross-institutional research programs on crop breeding and crop
productivity.
From 1979 to 1986, he worked as a Department Director and Director General, Tropical Agriculture Research Center (TARC, presently called Japan International Research Center for Agricultural
Sciences), and from 1986 to 1989 as Director General, National Institute of Agrobiological
Resources (NIAR) which focus on biotechnology and genetic resources. From 1995 to 2003,
he assumed a vice-chair of the MAFF Committee on the Environmental Safety Assessment of
GM Crops, and from 2004 he has been serving as a vice-chair of Assessment Committee for
Impact of GM Crops on Biological Diversity, jointly designated by both Minister of MAFF and Minister
of Environment. As to the international activities, he worked as the Regional Rice Improvement
Officer and Executive Secretary of International Rice Commission, FA0 Regional Office, Thailand,
from 1970 to 1973. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Colombia,
from 1987 to 1989, and of the International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR),
Netherland, from 1994 to 2000. Meantime, he served from 1989 to 1994 as a member of Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
From 1997 to the present, he has been a member of Japanese delegation to and a vice-chair of the
OECD Working Group on Harmonization of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology, France. He has
been regularly participating in the International Symposium on Biosafety of GMOs since 1992,
and is a member of the Advisory Board of the International Society for Biosafety Research since
November 2004. |
