Tony Conner, Ph.D. holds a joint position as a senior scientist at
the New Zealand Institute for Crop & Food Research and Professorial Fellow at Lincoln University where he teaches plant
biotechnology and supervises students undertaking MSc and PhD research.
He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in botany/ecology from University of Canterbury, NZ in 1978 and
a PhD in genetics from University of California, Davis, USA in 1985. Prof Conner's current research interests include the genetic manipulation of plants, especially potato, and the integration of cell
and molecular biology into breeding programmes of arable and vegetable crops. Since 1988 this
has involved field evaluations of transgenic crops, research that has been closely coupled with
biosafety evaluations.
He has also been involved in the establishment of the National Centre for Advanced
Bio-Protection Technologies based at Lincoln University and is currently the theme leader for
Agri-Biotechnology research.
Prof Conner has participated in several consultations on the environmental risk assessment
and food safety evaluation of transgenic crops for international agencies such as FAO, WHO,
OECD and ANZFA. He currently has a role in co-ordinating research on impacts on GM crops
in New Zealand.
