Ariel Alvarez-Morales

Ariel Alvarez-Morales, Ph.D.
is a senior researcher at the Department of
Plant Genetic Engineering of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav)
at Irapuato, Mexico.


Dr. Alvarez-Morales received his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the University of Sussex , UK in
1983. From 1983-1986 he held a postdoctoral position at the Institute of Microbiology of the Federal
Polytechnic Institute (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland, and moved from there to his present position in
Mexico.
Dr. Alvarez-Morales was a funding member of the National Biosafety Committee for Agriculture
(CNBA) and active member since 1988, and Coordinator of the Consultative Council for Biosafety
(2000-2003).
He has actively participated in the evaluation of more than 350 proposals for the release, importation
and mobilization of transgenic materials in Mexico, the drafting of the requirements for the release, importation and mobilization of transgenic materials in Mexico (NOM-FITO-056) and, together with
USDA and Agriculture-Canada representatives in setting up the criteria for the harmonization and procedures for the evaluation of proposals for release, importation and mobilization of transgenic materials in these countries.
He has been an instructor in Biosafety Workshops in Mexico, Colombia, Kenya, Nicaragua,
Costa Rica and Italy (ICGEB).
